16th-Century Miracle Chapel Reopens After Seven-Year Restoration

Leuven – The recently restored chapel of Onze-Lieve-Vrouw ter Koorts is now open to the public in Leuven. The chapel is integrated into the KADOC, the Documentation and Research Centre for Religion, Culture and Society affiliated with KU Leuven.

After undergoing seven years of dedicated restoration, the 16th-century Onze-Lieve-Vrouw ter Koorts chapel has been returned to its former religious and historical grandeur. This extensive project was made possible with support from the Flemish government, KU Leuven, and the Ast Fonteyne Genootschap, reviving a long-abandoned and deteriorating structure.

Renovation highlights include the revival of the chapel’s striking yellow facade, the installation of modern heating systems, and various interior refurbishments. These upgrades aim to preserve the chapel’s heritage while making it accessible and functional for contemporary use.

Now part of the KADOC’s Heritage and Documentation Center, the renovated space will host exhibitions and cultural events. The facility is also open to external organisations for a variety of uses.

The chapel holds particular significance for devotees due to its association with Marian worship. Its spiritual importance was underscored by a legend in which vandals failed to damage a statue of Our Lady—an event regarded as miraculous.

For many long-time residents of Leuven, the chapel is a familiar landmark, though it had remained unused and in poor condition for years.

“There was little or nothing to do with it—cold and damp,”

remarked Bart Raymaekers, chairman of KADOC.

“Now everything has been restored inside and out. There is heating, and the original colours are visible again. For example, the front facade is now a vibrant yellow.”

KADOC plans to utilise the chapel as a venue for exhibitions and events.

“But external parties can also use the chapel,”

added Raymaekers.

“The restoration took seven years and was made possible with the support of the Flemish government, KU Leuven, and especially the Ast Fonteyne Genootschap, for which we are very grateful.”

“This restoration reflects KU Leuven and KADOC’s commitment not only to preserve religious heritage but also to repurpose it as a place for reflection, culture, and dialogue. With the reopening, Leuven regains a valuable historical site that bridges past and future.”

said KU Leuven rector Luc Sels.

The Historical and Cultural Importance of Religious Heritage in Leuven

Leuven, located in the Flemish region of Belgium, is home to more than 30 religious heritage sites, with at least 15 originating from the medieval and early modern periods. These sites form a crucial part of the city’s cultural and historical identity.

According to the Flemish Heritage Agency, around 40% of Leuven’s historical chapels and churches have undergone restoration over the past two decades, driven by increasing efforts around cultural preservation. Between 2015 and 2023, the Flemish government allocated €12 million for religious heritage restoration, with KU Leuven contributing an additional €3 million through its cultural initiatives.

The Onze-Lieve-Vrouw ter Koorts chapel is one of 12 surviving chapels from the 16th century that are dedicated to Marian devotion. Historical documents reveal that at least five of these chapels were preserved because of miraculous events reported at the sites.

A 2021 KADOC survey found that 60% of restored religious facilities in Flanders are repurposed for cultural or academic use—an evolution that aligns with the new function of the chapel.

By the third day, we begin to appreciate the waves, the coffee aroma, or the mountain air. Between turning off notifications and experiencing sound sleep, our brains undergo subtle rewiring.
Vacations, often seen as rewards or luxuries, are
