Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Friday plans to meet U.S. President Donald Trump soon. In a post on X, he shared that Rustem Umerov from Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council updated him on recent U.S. contacts. A meeting with President Trump is expected shortly, with hopes for significant decisions before year-end.
Zelenskyy’s declaration followed Thursday’s discussions with U.S. negotiator Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, which he described as productive for peace process timing. Intensified Ukrainian-U.S. interactions emerge amid growing peace deal prospects, nearly four years into Ukraine’s resistance against Russian aggression.
Umerov, heading Kyiv’s delegation, met with Witkoff and Kushner in Miami, after their Berlin trip for discussions with Ukrainian and European officials. On Wednesday, Zelenskyy presented an updated 20-point peace plan including a potential special economic zone in Donbas, areas claimed by Moscow.
The plan is an update on a Trump administration proposal originally deemed a “non-starter” by Kyiv and the EU. It includes proposed security guarantees from the U.S., NATO, and European allies, comparable to NATO’s Article 5. Moscow stated it is analyzing the proposal.
