Former U.S. President Donald Trump has previously voiced doubts about American military support for Ukraine. However, he recently indicated a willingness to negotiate a deal—on the condition that Kyiv grants the U.S. access to its mineral resources, including rare-earth elements. These minerals, which have also driven U.S. interest in Greenland, are crucial for industries such as defense, electronics, and energy production.
Seeking to attract international partners and strengthen its negotiating position with Russia, Ukraine has highlighted its vast natural resources. In a Reuters interview on Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed openness to providing access to Ukraine’s deposits.
“The Americans contributed the most, so they should also benefit the most … I would like to discuss this with President Trump,” Zelenskyy stated. However, he clarified that the resources wouldn’t simply be handed over to the U.S. but would instead be developed through joint ventures.
In addition to mineral wealth, Ukraine’s gas storage facilities present another potential avenue for cooperation. Prior to Russia’s invasion, Ukraine served as a key transit hub for Russian natural gas flowing into Europe. Meanwhile, the U.S. has since become the world’s leading exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
“We are prepared to sign contracts for LNG supplies to Ukraine and position ourselves as a hub for all of Europe,” Zelenskyy noted.
Trump announced late Friday that he might meet with Zelenskyy next week. At the same time, he emphasized that he maintains a “very good relationship” with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
