Kyiv (Eurotoday) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has made clear he will not meet with any Russian officials other than President Vladimir Putin during his upcoming visit to Istanbul, according to presidential advisor Mykhailo Podolyak, who made the statement during Tuesday’s Breakfast Show. Podolyak emphasized that engaging with lower-ranking Russian officials would be “pointless.”
Can a ceasefire happen without territorial concessions?
U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed interest in joining Thursday’s proposed meeting in Istanbul, which has emerged as a potential venue to address the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War Two. As of now, Putin has yet to confirm his attendance.
“No, of course. Well, this is not the format,”
Podolyak dismissed the idea of Zelensky engaging with other Russian leaders in Putin’s absence. He noted that even top Russian ministers lack the authority to make essential decisions about ending the war.
Analysts indicate that while both Russia and Ukraine have shown a willingness to discuss peace, especially following Trump’s renewed push to end the war, a formal agreement remains elusive.
Is Ukraine willing to accept Trump’s peace proposal?
Zelensky has extended an invitation to Putin for peace talks in Turkey on May 15, which would mark their first direct meeting since the start of the full-scale conflict. Although Moscow has expressed an openness to talks, confirmation of a face-to-face between the leaders is still pending.
Putin recently floated the idea of direct negotiations with Ukraine but rejected a Ukrainian call for a 30-day unconditional ceasefire. In response, Trump publicly urged Zelensky to accept this ceasefire offer.
While visiting Saudi Arabia, Trump unexpectedly proposed on Monday that he might travel to Istanbul if prospects for a breakthrough appear favorable.
“I was thinking about actually flying over there. There’s a possibility of it, I guess, if I think things can happen, but we’ve got to get it done,”
Trump said before departing for his second foreign trip since returning to the presidency in January.
“Don’t underestimate Thursday in Turkey.”
Can a ceasefire happen without territorial concessions?
Reuters reported last year that Putin expressed a willingness to consider a ceasefire during discussions with Trump. However, Russia also insisted it would not cede any occupied territory and demanded that Ukraine abandon its ambitions to join NATO.
Ukraine maintains that a ceasefire must precede any broader negotiations. This position is strongly supported by Kyiv’s European allies. Ukraine also demands robust security guarantees as part of any peace framework and has rejected Russian suggestions to limit the size of Ukrainian armed forces. Territorial issues, according to Ukraine, can only be addressed after a formal ceasefire is in place.
