Ypres (Eurotoday) – Construction of a brand-new swimming pool in Ypres is set to begin in May 2025. The €16 million project is expected to take two years to complete and will feature seating for 150 spectators, a cafeteria, and facilities capable of hosting the Belgian Swimming Championships.
Located at the city’s main sports complex, the new swimming pool will be a modern, inclusive space aimed at serving all Ypres residents. After years of planning and delays, the project has finally reached the execution phase. City officials emphasized that the facility is designed to meet a wide range of needs—from swim lessons for young children and wellness experiences for adults to high-level training for competitive swimmers.
Transforming Sports in Ypres with a €16 Million Facility
The addition of the swimming pool is part of a broader initiative in Flanders focused on upgrading and modernizing sports infrastructure, with a particular emphasis on swimming. Officials hope that by creating such spaces, they can promote healthier lifestyles and more environmentally sustainable infrastructure.
Designed to be more than just a sports venue, the facility will also include a cafeteria space intended as a social hub for students and the broader community. Although a vendor has not yet been confirmed to run the cafeteria, the city envisions it as a place where people can gather and build connections—reinforcing the pool’s role as a community centerpiece.
While the new pool is under construction, the current swimming facility will remain open to ensure uninterrupted access to aquatic facilities. Once the new pool is operational, the city will assess the future of the old pool, with options ranging from renovation to repurposing or demolition.

Oh, fantastic! Just what Ypres needs—another €16 million swimming pool. Because clearly, the city was lacking in the high-stakes competition of ‘who can spend the most on a place to get wet’! 🏊♂️💸

€16 million for a swimming pool? Must be some high-end water! 🏊♂️ Maybe they’ll throw in a lifeguard with a degree in underwater basket weaving for that price. 😂
