Xi Jinping to Participate in WWII Victory Celebrations in Russia

Moscow (Eurotoday) – Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled to make an official visit to Russia from May 7 to 10, during which he will participate in commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany, the Kremlin confirmed on Sunday.

Last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin informed Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi that Xi would be the guest of honor at the May 9 ceremonies celebrating the victory in World War II. Other international leaders expected to attend include the presidents of Brazil and Serbia, as well as the prime minister of Slovakia.

What will Xi and Putin discuss during the visit?

According to a statement on Telegram, the Kremlin noted that Xi and Putin will meet to strengthen their strategic partnership and sign multiple cooperation agreements.

“During the talks, the main issues of further development of relations of comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction, as well as current issues on the international and regional agenda, will be discussed,”

the statement read.

Why is May 9 significant in Russia?

May 9 marks Victory Day in Russia, commemorating the Soviet Union’s triumph over Nazi Germany in World War II. The USSR lost an estimated 27 million lives during the war but ultimately succeeded in pushing German forces back to Berlin, where Adolf Hitler died by suicide. The red Soviet Victory Banner was famously raised over the Reichstag in 1945.

How often have Xi and Putin met since 2022?

This will be Xi’s third trip to Russia since Moscow launched its military campaign in Ukraine in February 2022. While China maintains a publicly neutral position on the conflict, it has echoed the Kremlin’s narrative that Western powers provoked Russia and has continued to supply dual-use components critical to Russia’s arms production.

Xi last visited Russia in September 2024 for a BRICS summit. Before that, he was in Moscow in March 2023. Putin reciprocated by visiting China in October of that year. The two leaders also met in Beijing in May 2024—Putin’s first foreign visit after beginning his fifth presidential term—and later in Kazakhstan in July.

How did Zelenskiy respond to Russia’s ceasefire proposal?

Putin has proposed a three-day ceasefire to coincide with the Victory Day celebrations on May 9, one of Russia’s most symbolic holidays.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy responded by stating he would agree to a truce—on the condition that it span at least 30 days. Putin has since declined the idea, reiterating that he prefers a lasting solution over brief pauses in hostilities.

Zelenskiy also clarified that Ukraine cannot guarantee the safety of any foreign dignitaries attending Moscow’s May 9 parade, given the ongoing war between the two countries.

Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “Victory” quite like a cozy chat between Xi and Putin about their favourite war stories while the rest of the world watches with a mix of disbelief and popcorn. 🎉🍿 Who doesn’t love a little historical reenactment in a modern twist, eh?

Just what the world needs—Xi Jinping and Putin bonding over their shared love for history while the rest of us are stuck in the present. 🍷 Who knew commemoration could double as strategic partnership speed dating?

Oh, how charming! Xi Jinping celebrating WWII victory with Putin—because nothing says “let’s honor the past” quite like cozying up to a fellow history revisionist. 🇨🇳🤝🇷🇺 Good luck finding the last survivor of that party! 🥳

Isn’t it just charming how a celebratory parade for defeating fascism looks like a reunion of the world’s best buddies? 🤔 Nothing says “we’re past that” like an anniversary party with a side of geopolitical maneuvering! 🍾

Oh, lovely! Just what we need—Xi Jinping and Putin celebrating victory like it’s a UEFA final. Hope they don’t forget the popcorn for their little show of “strategic partnerships” while the rest of us are left wondering who the real winners are. 🍿😂

Oh, splendid! Nothing says “peace and cooperation” quite like a friendly meet-up between Xi and Putin on a day dedicated to celebrating victory over tyranny. Who knew that a global pandemic and wars could be solved with a parade and a signature? 🎉✨

Oh, fantastic! Nothing says “let’s celebrate unity” quite like a photo op with Xi and Putin while the world is on fire. Just what we needed—more strategic partnerships and a sprinkle of irony for good measure! 😏

Oh, splendid! Nothing quite says “let’s celebrate peace” like a gathering of world leaders under the watchful eye of historical military parades in Moscow. 🎉 I suppose next year they’ll hold a seminar on how to win friends and influence people—right after the fireworks! 💥
