Woman Set on Fire in Houthalen, Suspect Still at Large

Helchteren (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – On July 3, 2025, in Helchteren, a 41-year-old woman was severely burned in a suspected domestic violence attack. Her ex-partner, the suspect, is still on the run.

As VRT News reported, on Wednesday, July 3, 2025, an act of violence happened on Kazernelaan in Houthalen-Helchteren, a municipality in the province of Limburg, Belgium. A 41-year-old woman was badly injured in an attack. Her former partner is accused of trying to set her on fire.

She has very serious burn injuries and is fighting for her life. The emergency services helped her and took her to the burn centre at the University Hospitals Leuven. Doctors say she is still in danger. The community is shocked by how brutal the attack was, and the police and media are paying close attention.

Was the Houthalen fire attack a planned attempt to kill?

The suspect fled after the attack. He is being sought by the police. They are collaborating with the public prosecutor’s office in Limburg. In order to gather evidence, the police have blocked off the area and are speaking with witnesses. Police mentioned that it might have been planned.

5 children, aged 2 to 15, were at home on Kazernelaan in Houthalen Helchteren when their mother was allegedly set on fire by her former partner. They saw the attack happen. Paramedics treated the mother’s critical burns, and victim support teams arrived to help the children right away.

Counselors spoke with them and began crisis therapy so they could start coping with the trauma. The children are now staying with other relatives, who give them safety while police and prosecutors continue the investigation.

The Limburg public prosecutor’s office quickly started a full investigation. The case is now being handled as attempted murder. To examine the woman’s wounds and determine how the attack occurred, a forensic physician was called in. To gather tangible proof that could shed light on what was done and why, forensic lab specialists visited the residence.

Since fire was used in the attack, the judge also ordered a fire expert to come to the scene. That expert looked into how the fire began and whether anything like fuel or a fire-starting tool was used. The police are still working on the case, and the suspect has not yet been found.
