Rafał Trzaskowski expressed gratitude after securing a significant mandate to challenge the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party. “I would like to thank you all so much. I’ve got a very strong mandate, courage, and determination to defeat PiS,” Trzaskowski stated following the announcement of results on Saturday, shortly before noon. He is set to unveil a detailed campaign platform on December 7.
Five years ago, Trzaskowski faced incumbent President Andrzej Duda in a tightly contested presidential election. Despite a strong campaign, he narrowly lost to Duda, whose victory was bolstered by PiS’s domination of public media. With Duda now ineligible to run for a third term, Trzaskowski may have a better shot at clinching Poland’s presidency.
Among Trzaskowski’s competitors are Szymon Hołownia, leader of the centrist Poland 2050 party, which is part of Donald Tusk’s ruling coalition. Hołownia announced his presidential candidacy earlier this month. Another contender is Sławomir Mentzen from the far-right Confederation alliance. Meanwhile, Poland’s fragmented Left has yet to declare their candidate or candidates.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk, though refraining from overtly supporting any one candidate, recently shared polling data suggesting Trzaskowski holds a stronger position against a PiS opponent.
“Rafał Trzaskowski beats the PiS candidate 40 to 28 in the first round and 57 to 43 in the second. Radek Sikorski loses to the PiS candidate 28 to 30 in the first round but wins 54 to 46 in the second. The result of the poll is clear, but it is only an indication. Your vote has the power to decide!” Tusk posted on social media earlier this week.
The race for Poland’s presidency is heating up as candidates position themselves for what promises to be a high-stakes campaign.
