Von der Leyen: The EU Welcomes Constructive Dialogue with the US, But is Prepared to Respond to Targeted Actions

At a press conference following the informal European Council in Brussels, which focused on defense and transatlantic relations, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed the EU’s willingness to engage in constructive dialogue with the US. She also emphasized that the EU stands ready to respond firmly if unfair or arbitrary actions are taken against it.

Von der Leyen discussed the importance of transatlantic cooperation, stating, “we all know that much is at stake.”

She highlighted the need for a realistic partnership with the US, acknowledging the emergence of new challenges and increasing uncertainties. “The EU is prepared for strong yet constructive discussions with the US,” she noted, while also recognizing potential difficulties in the relationship with Washington and affirming that the EU is ready to address them.

“If the EU faces unfair or arbitrary targeting, we will respond decisively,” von der Leyen clarified.

Commenting on US tariffs imposed on Mexico, Canada, and China, she remarked, “nothing positive comes out of this.” She pointed out that such tariffs elevate business costs, negatively impact workers and consumers, create unnecessary economic disruptions, and drive inflation higher.

Thus, von der Leyen stressed the EU’s commitment to engaging in “productive discussions” with the US and expressed a desire for timely dialogue. Concurrently, she acknowledged that the EU has its own challenges to tackle, stating, “We must focus on our own issues and work to enhance our competitiveness.”

Oh, brilliant! Nothing like a good old transatlantic chat while we play a game of “who can throw the most tariffs” — it’s just like a friendly game of chess, but with much higher stakes and less fun. Cheers to “constructive dialogue” while the world keeps spinning out of control! 😏🍷

Isn’t it just marvelous when the EU talks about “constructive dialogue”? 🤔 Sounds a bit like asking a stubborn mule for advice on how to pull a cart, doesn’t it? At least we can count on a good show while they pretend to negotiate, eh? 🥴💼

Oh brilliant, another round of “let’s chat” with the US while we prepare our best poker faces for their so-called “constructive” actions. 🤷‍♂️ Meanwhile, I’m sure the businesses will just love the added drama of tariffs—who needs stability when you have such excitement, right? 🍿

Isn’t it adorable how Ursula believes ‘constructive dialogue’ will do the trick? 😂 Meanwhile, I’m just wondering if we can get a side of chips with that response to ‘targeted actions’—you know, just to soften the blow when they inevitably come! 🍟

Looks like Ursula’s ready for a “constructive dialogue”—just what we need, another round of polite sparring while the rest of us try to make sense of tariffs like they’re some sort of trendy new diet. 🍽️ Good luck with that, love!
