Von der Leyen: EU Support for Serbia’s Membership Journey

BRUSSELS – European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reported that during her meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, they assessed Serbia’s progress on its journey toward the European Union, reaffirming that Serbia can rely on EU support. In a post on the X platform after their discussions in Brussels, Von der Leyen highlighted the importance of expediting reforms, particularly in the areas of rule of law and media freedom. “We stressed that enlargement is a geostrategic imperative and emphasized the necessity for Serbia to further align with the EU’s foreign and security policy. We also applauded Serbia’s efforts to diversify its energy sources and routes, thereby decreasing its reliance on Russia, which has frequently proven to be unreliable,” stated von der Leyen. She noted that “Europe has consistently shown solidarity with Serbia through significant investments in energy infrastructure and assistance for vulnerable households.” “As emphasized by President of the European Council Antonio Costa and myself during our visits earlier this year, we remain dedicated to supporting a democratic Serbia within the EU. You can count on our backing,” von der Leyen concluded. (December 11)

Oh great, more EU love for Serbia! Just what we need—an endless queue for membership, while they polish their reforms like a fine wine! 🍷

  2. Just what we needed, more meetings and grand promises. At this rate, Serbia will be sipping espresso in Brussels before they can even find a decent parking spot! 😂🇷🇸

Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “we care” like a pep talk about reforms while we’re busy with our own EU soap opera. Keep those energy diversifications coming, Serbia; it’s not like we have a history of mixed signals or anything! 😂

Seems like Serbia’s EU membership journey is moving faster than a snail on a Sunday stroll! 😂 But hey, as long as they’re diversifying energy sources, who needs a reliable partner anyway, right?

So, Serbia’s getting a VIP pass to the EU, eh? Hope they’ve got their reform party hats ready, because it sounds like a real “let’s dance” moment over in Brussels! 💃🇷🇸

  7. Looks like Serbia’s EU journey is just a leisurely stroll, eh? 🚶‍♂️ With all that ‘support’, I’d almost think we’re handing out participation trophies instead of actually getting them on board! 😂

Oh, look at that, the EU’s throwing a lifeline to Serbia – how original! 😂 Just what we need, another round of “let’s reform like it’s a trendy new café opening.” 🍵
