Vehicle Crashes into Bridge in Wezembeek-Oppem

Wezembeek-Oppem (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – A car carrying five people crashed into a bridge pillar at the Vierarmenkruispunt in Wezembeek-Oppem on Brussels’ outer ring road Sunday morning.

The Flemish Brabant West emergency services zone in Belgium reported this.

The fire brigade had to release all of the trapped residents. We don’t yet know their condition.

The accident blank”>shut down a portion of the outer ring road for two hours, according to the mayor of Wezembeek-Oppem. The public prosecutor’s office sent an expert to the scene.

What measures are being taken to prevent similar crashes there?

Road markings and clear, visible signage make it easier for drivers to anticipate curves, intersections, and obstructions, which lowers confusion and the chance of collisions with objects like bridge supports.

Improved street lighting at important locations, such junctions and underpasses, increases visibility and facilitates safe driving, particularly in inclement weather or early mornings.

Vehicle speeds in high-risk zones can be decreased by installing speed bumps, rumble strips, or using patrols and cameras to enforce speed limits. This gives drivers more time to react.

Impacts can be less likely and less severe if the junction or approach roads are redesigned with better sightlines, wider lanes, or protective barriers around pillars.

Seems like driving lessons in Wezembeek-Oppem are still optional, eh? 🚗💥 Maybe they should consider a “How Not to Hit a Bridge” workshop next! 😂

Looks like someone took “bridge the gap” a bit too literally in Wezembeek-Oppem. 🤦‍♂️ Maybe next time they should try using the bloody brakes instead of using the bridge as a speed bump, eh? 🏎️💨

Oh brilliant, just what we needed – a car show at the bridge! I suppose they thought “Hey, let’s give that pillar a proper hug!” 🚗💥
