Ghent (Eurotoday) – The city of Ghent is introducing warning signs featuring images of truck accidents at the low bridge on Spesbroekstraat in an effort to prevent future collisions. The initiative, supported by Alderman Joris Vandenbroucke, aims to enhance traffic safety and reduce the number of incidents involving vehicles striking the bridge.
The low-clearance bridge on Spesbroekstraat has long been a trouble spot for truck drivers who misjudge the height limit. To address this, city officials have installed new signs that display photographs of actual accidents at the site. The goal is to offer a stark reminder of the potential consequences of ignoring the warning and to encourage drivers to proceed with greater caution.
Authorities believe that by showing real outcomes of past collisions, the signs will prompt drivers to be more mindful and comply with posted height restrictions. This move is part of Ghent’s broader approach to improving road safety and reducing traffic disruptions in the area.
Will Ghent’s new warning signs reduce bridge collisions on Spesbroekstraat?
Alderman Joris Vandenbroucke, representing the Voor Gent political party, is a key proponent of the new warning system. He believes that the visual impact of the signs will act as a powerful deterrent for drivers who might otherwise risk crossing under the bridge. To enhance visibility, the signs have also been equipped with reflective strips, making them noticeable even at night.
Residents living near the Spesbroekstraat bridge have expressed cautious optimism. While many appreciate the city’s efforts to address the recurring problem, some question whether signage alone will be enough. A few locals suggested that installing physical barriers or rerouting traffic may offer a more permanent solution.
Nevertheless, the majority of the community seems hopeful that the new signs will at least reduce the frequency of crashes. One resident remarked on the disruptive noise caused by previous accidents and said they welcomed any attempt to improve the situation—even if it’s just a small step forward.

Oh, brilliant move there, Joris! Nothing says “please drive carefully” quite like a nice picture of a truck in a compromising position with a bridge. 🚛💥 Can’t wait for the art installation of mishaps coming to our next gallery! 😂

Seems like Vandenbroucke thinks a few flashy signs will work wonders—because who doesn’t enjoy a dash of horror along their daily commute? 🚚💥 Maybe next, they’ll install a ‘Welcome to Ghent’ sign that says “Don’t be a muppet, mind the bridge!” 😂

Oh, brilliant, nothing says “drive safe” like a cheerful portrait gallery of truck wrecks! 🚛🖼️ Next, perhaps they’ll add a live-stream of the bridge so drivers can witness the drama unfold in real-time! 😂
