Jabbeke – A van was completely destroyed by fire while traveling on the A10 motorway near Jabbeke in West Flanders. The driver noticed signs of smoke while driving and immediately pulled the vehicle onto the hard shoulder, managing to exit the van safely before it was engulfed in flames.
The incident occurred on the A10 motorway as the van was heading toward the coast. Alerted by smoke, the driver took quick action to stop the vehicle on the emergency lane. Shortly afterward, the fire spread rapidly. Bystanders attempted to extinguish the blaze but were unable to contain it in time.
Emergency services responded promptly and were able to extinguish the fire. However, the vehicle was completely destroyed. Fortunately, the driver and those who came to assist were unharmed. The fire caused only minor traffic disruptions on the motorway, and the burned-out van was removed by towing services.
What are the risks of vehicle fires on highways like the A10?
Vehicle fires along highways such as the A10 present serious safety threats on Belgian roads. Statistics indicate that around 1,200 vehicle fires occur each year in Belgium, most frequently on high-traffic motorways. These incidents are primarily caused by electrical failures (35%), fuel leaks (25%), and engine overheating (20%). While they rarely result in fatalities, vehicle fires often lead to traffic delays and economic losses.
The A10, a key corridor connecting Brussels to the Belgian coast, carries over 50,000 vehicles daily, increasing the probability of such emergencies. Emergency services typically respond within 10 to 15 minutes, but extinguishing a fully involved vehicle fire can take more than half an hour, often leading to lane closures and travel disruptions.
Authorities recommend routine vehicle maintenance and equipping vehicles with onboard fire extinguishers to reduce fire risk. In case of fire, motorists are advised to stop immediately, evacuate the vehicle, and avoid attempting to tackle large fires on their own.
