The ISW evaluated that Moscow might need to abandon or significantly change its planned operations in Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, or possibly both.
Meanwhile, Russia continues to apply pressure on Ukraine in other areas.
When asked on Tuesday about increased Russian activity near the Sumy border region in northeastern Ukraine, Zelenskyy informed reporters via a WhatsApp chat that Moscow still aims to create a buffer zone there and in the neighboring Kharkiv region. However, Ukrainian forces are maintaining their defense.

“It’s clear that they wish to create a buffer zone in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions,” Zelenskyy stated. “But we have also not abandoned our objectives. We have them blocked everywhere. Thus, there are no risks in the Sumy region at present.”
He mentioned that Ukrainian forces are attentively monitoring the border situation and protecting settlements and infrastructure from Russian attacks, which he noted continue to target civilian areas.
The progress comes as Russia’s full-scale invasion enters its fifth year, with Moscow finding it difficult to achieve significant progress despite deploying large numbers of troops for the continuous assaults along the front.
