Ukraine Outlines Needs for Support Troop Deployment and Security Measures
Ukraine is currently working to define how Western forces could support the country’s defense efforts, outlining its expectations for deployment and the necessary security arrangements that would accompany any such mission.
“Ukraine has a vision for how these forces would operate as security guarantors,” said Ukrainian official Palisa. “However, everything still needs to be discussed, approved, and verified at both political and military levels.”
Ukrainian officials believe that any deployment of Western troops would also bolster civilian safety, as international forces would likely bring advanced air defense systems and protective measures with them.
“For instance, if a French brigade were to be deployed to a specific region — even with a minimal troop density, say, three soldiers per kilometer — they would still need to have aerial protection. This is a standard aspect of military planning,” explained Palisa. A typical brigade comprises between 3,000 and 5,000 troops.
Such a deployment would necessitate a range of additional support: strengthened air defense systems, electronic warfare capabilities, integrated coordination with air power, protection for allied naval assets, robust logistics, and more.
“It’s a multifaceted issue that demands detailed planning and consideration of many factors. That’s exactly what we’re working on now,” Palisa said.
The comments come just a day after a high-level “coalition of the willing” meeting. Following that gathering, NATO is set to host the Ukraine Defense Contact Group — a forum created by the United States to streamline military aid efforts for Ukraine. The meeting will be co-chaired by the U.K. and Germany, with U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth scheduled to join via teleconference.
