An incident has occurred as Ukraine’s anti-corruption agencies expanded an investigation into an alleged bribery scheme involving members of the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s parliament. On Saturday, NABU and SAP announced they had uncovered an organized criminal group comprising sitting lawmakers who allegedly received illicit payments for voting in favor of certain parliamentary decisions. Investigators indicated that the scheme was systematic and might have involved additional intermediaries. Authorities have not revealed the identities of the lawmakers under investigation, stating more information will be released after investigative actions are finalized. Prosecutors are examining multiple voting incidents and potential illicit gains, with each case to be evaluated according to Ukrainian law. Established after Ukraine’s 2014 Maidan uprising, NABU is viewed by Kyiv’s Western partners as a crucial component of the country’s anti-corruption efforts. Any interference with its operations is likely to attract attention, especially as Ukraine seeks to show progress on rule-of-law reforms and its pursuit of EU integration.
