UK PM Starmer and EU Chief Von der Leyen Discuss Lasting Peace in Ukraine

British PM Keir Starmer and EU Commission president Ursula von der Leyen discussed “the need to secure a just and enduring peace in Ukraine” during a telephone call, a Downing Street spokesperson stated.

The phone conversation follows concerns among European leaders about being excluded by US President Donald Trump from discussions with Russia regarding the future of the conflict in Ukraine, which is now marking its third anniversary.

Ahead of the three-year anniversary of Russia’s barbaric illegal war, they discussed the need to secure a just and enduring peace in Ukraine, and agreed that Europe must step up for the good of collective European security,

the spokesperson stated in a statement.

What did Starmer and Zelensky discuss during their phone call?

In a separate phone call with President Volodymyr Zelensky, Starmer reaffirmed

UK’s rock-solid support for Ukraine,

a Downing Street official noted.

“They both shared the view that this was a moment of huge importance for Ukraine’s future and European security writ large,” the statement read, as tensions between the US and Ukraine remain high.

The Prime Minister repeated that Ukraine must be at the heart of any negotiations to end the war,

the spokesperson stated, noting that Starmer would raise the issue during his upcoming discussion with Trump in Washington.

PM Starmer is planning blank”>to use his talks with Trump to serve as a “bridge” between the US and Europe and to provide territorial and security guarantees for Ukraine in the event of a peace agreement. This task has become increasingly challenging following a public dispute last week between Zelensky and Trump, who referred to the Ukrainian leader as a “dictator.”

Trump also criticized Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron for failing to end the war during a Fox News interview.
