In Paris, on Wednesday, twelve European research ministers came together to sign a letter initiated by France, calling for a continent-wide meeting to coordinate efforts in accommodating foreign researchers whose work is at risk, particularly in light of recent developments in the United States.
The letter, sent to Ekaterina Zakharieva, the European Commissioner responsible for Start-ups, Research, and Innovation, emphasizes the need for “immediate action and concrete political dialogue.”
This initiative aims to “demonstrate solidarity and enhance the appeal of hosting exceptional foreign talent who may face barriers to their research and abrupt, unjustified funding cuts,” as stated in the letter sent to AFP.
French Research Minister Philippe Baptiste explained to AFP that he took the lead in rallying European counterparts “in response to the urgency created by the American administration’s policies on research,” referring to the significant budget cuts affecting various universities and research institutions.
