Riyadh (Eurotoday) – On Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump met with Syria’s president in Saudi Arabia and encouraged him to consider establishing diplomatic ties with long-standing adversary Israel. This meeting came after a surprise U.S. announcement lifting all sanctions on the Islamist-led Syrian government.
Prior to a summit between the United States and Gulf Arab states, Trump sat down with Syria’s Ahmed al-Sharaa. Saudi state television aired images of the leaders shaking hands, with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) in attendance. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also reportedly took part in the meeting via virtual link.
According to the White House press secretary, Trump urged Sharaa to follow the example of the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Morocco—nations that normalised relations with Israel under the U.S.-brokered Abraham Accords in 2020.
Why did Trump lift sanctions on Syria now?
Delivering a speech on Tuesday in Riyadh, Trump unveiled a significant foreign policy shift by announcing the removal of longstanding sanctions on Syria. This decision came despite concerns within segments of the U.S. administration over Syria’s past ties to extremist groups like Al Qaeda.
“I will be ordering the cessation of sanctions against Syria in order to give them a chance at greatness,”
Speaking at an investment forum in Riyadh at the start of a four-nation Gulf tour, Trump added,
“It’s their time to shine. We’re taking them all off,”
He concluded with a hopeful message:
“Good luck, Syria, show us something very special.”
Trump also indicated that this outreach could mark the beginning of a normalization process between Washington and Damascus, starting with his personal meeting with Sharaa.
Could Saudi Arabia finally join the Abraham Accords?
The United States remains hopeful that Saudi Arabia may eventually join the Abraham Accords. Dialogue on the issue paused following the outbreak of the Gaza conflict, and Saudi leaders have repeatedly stated that recognition of Israel is contingent on the creation of a Palestinian state. On Tuesday, Trump remarked that Riyadh would join the accords in its own time.
Is Trump’s Middle East tour reshaping regional alliances?
On the first day of his Middle East tour, Trump was welcomed with elaborate ceremonies and sealed lucrative deals, including a $600 billion commitment from Saudi Arabia for investments in the United States and $142 billion in arms sales.
Next on Trump’s itinerary is Doha, Qatar, where he is expected to hold a state visit with Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and other Qatari officials. As a key U.S. ally in the region, Qatar is anticipated to announce substantial investments in American infrastructure and business sectors.
The White House also disclosed plans to accept a Boeing 747-8 aircraft from Qatar, which will be modified to serve as the next Air Force One.
Later in the week, Trump will travel to Abu Dhabi on Thursday for meetings with leaders of the United Arab Emirates. He is expected to return to Washington on Friday but hinted at a possible last-minute trip to Turkey for a potential meeting involving Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
