AfD politicians claim that mainstream German politicians are the true antidemocratic forces, seeking to suppress the will of the German people using the state apparatus. This perspective often finds sympathy in MAGA circles.
When Germany’s domestic intelligence agency labeled the AfD as extremist, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the action “tyranny in disguise.” During the Munich Security Conference, U.S. Vice President JD Vance urged European politicians to safeguard free speech rights for anti-immigration parties and to dismantle barriers that exclude far-right parties from governance.
AfD politicians have frequently visited Washington to argue that they are victims of political persecution and seek American support. Recently, German right-wing influencer and AfD ally Naomi Seibt applied for asylum in the U.S., claiming persecution in Germany and citing “intelligence surveillance and harassment.”
During a Berlin speech, Bruesewitz compared the alleged persecution of MAGA Republicans in the U.S. to the suppression faced by AfD leaders, pointing to Trump’s indictments and the deplatforming of right-wing figures as examples. He emphasized the need to protect free speech, receiving applause.
However, not all of Bruesewitz’s remarks were well-received, as his defense of Trump’s tariffs, which have negatively impacted Germany’s export industries, did not garner applause.
