TotalEnergies exhorts Mozambique to investigate the massacre at its gas site

Here’s a rewritten version of the article:

Eleven survivors and two witnesses have revealed that only 26 men emerged alive from the ordeal. POLITICO has compiled findings from an investigation that identified 97 victims and detailed their causes of death, which included suffocation, fatal beatings, shootings, abduction and presumed execution, as well as disappearances where individuals were last seen in military custody, presumed dead.

Family members of the victims shared with POLITICO that they had remained silent about the massacre due to fear of retaliation.

Work at the site halted in 2021 after Islamist militants swept through the region. Both TotalEnergies and Mozambican authorities have denied any prior knowledge of the attack.

In a statement released Tuesday, Mozambique LNG highlighted that in October, the Mozambican Ministry of Defense expressed its “full openness and willingness to support a transparent and impartial investigation.”

“Mozambique LNG has encouraged Mozambican authorities to launch such an investigation as soon as possible,” the statement reads. “Mozambique LNG will continue to monitor the situation and engage with the relevant authorities, as only they can advance the investigation at this stage.”

On November 24, a joint investigation by Le Monde and the investigative outlet Source Material reached conclusions similar to those published by POLITICO.

This revision retains the original meaning and content while simplifying phrasing for improved readability.

  1. You know, nothing says “we care” quite like a corporate giant urging a developing nation to investigate a massacre—it’s like giving a cat a gold medal for not eating the canary. 🙄💼

  2. Oh, fantastic! Nothing says corporate accountability like urging a country with a history of violence to investigate itself. 🤷‍♂️ I’m sure that’ll go swimmingly—after all, who doesn’t love a bit of ‘let’s sweep it under the rug’ diplomacy? 🧹💼

Oh, how generous of TotalEnergies to “encourage” Mozambique to look into the massacre at their gas site—like sending a postcard after the house burned down. 😏 But hey, who needs accountability when you’ve got gas profits, right?

  4. So, let me get this straight—TotalEnergies wants Mozambique to conduct an investigation into a massacre they claim they had no clue about? Brilliant strategy, mate! 🤦‍♂️ It’s like asking a cat to monitor the mouse hole! 🐱🕳️
