The United West Has Fallen

European leaders have been quick to overlook U.S. President Donald Trump’s unauthorized military action in Venezuela and his audacious claims on Greenland, but Europeans themselves increasingly see Washington as more of a foe than a friend.

This is highlighted by a poll from the European Council on Foreign Relations and Oxford University’s Europe in a Changing World research project, conducted in November 2025. The poll, which surveyed 26,000 people across 21 countries, found that only one in six respondents viewed the U.S. as an ally, whereas one in five saw it as a rival or adversary. This sentiment is particularly strong in Germany, France, and Spain, approaching 30 percent, and in Switzerland, it reaches 39 percent due to increased tariffs highlighted by Trump.

Support for the U.S. has rapidly dwindled across Europe. As global power dynamics shift, perceptions of Europe are evolving as well.

With Trump’s America First policy often sidelining Europe, other nations are now recognizing the EU as an autonomous geopolitical entity. This is especially notable in Russia, where the public’s hostility towards the U.S. has eased, with 37 percent now seeing the U.S. as an adversary, down from 64 percent two years prior. Instead, Europeans face increased scrutiny, with 72 percent of Russians viewing the EU as either an adversary or a rival, up from 69 percent the previous year.

Additionally, Washington’s change in policy towards Russia has influenced its approach to Ukraine, prompting Ukrainians, once reliant on the U.S., to seek protection from Europe. Ukrainians differentiate U.S. from European policies, with nearly two-thirds expecting strengthened relations with the EU, compared to only a third anticipating the same with the U.S.

Beyond Europe, Trump’s first year in office has significantly shifted global alliances, drawing countries closer to China. From South Africa and Brazil to Turkey, many foresee their relationships with China intensifying in the next five years. In these regions, more people view Beijing as an ally compared to Washington.

Seems like the only thing that’s “great” about America these days is the distance we’re keeping from it. Who knew the U.S. could become the new ‘bad boy’ of geopolitics? 😂

Seems like America’s playing a game of “who needs allies anyway?” while Europe’s busy saying, “Oh, bless their hearts!” 😂 The old transatlantic friendship is giving off some serious vibes of a bad rom-com gone wrong.

Looks like the only thing more unpopular than a soggy baguette at a French café is Uncle Sam these days. 🤔 With mates turning their backs and China rolling out the red carpet, it’s a right laugh watching the U.S. lose its charm. 🍷

  4. Ain’t it grand? The once mighty U.S. is now just another rival in the European game of geopolitical chess. Guess we should start sending them “Best of Luck” cards along with our tariffs! 😂✌️

Seems like the “land of the free” is now just a distant memory for us lot, eh? 🤷‍♂️ Who knew we’d need a map to navigate who’s actually friendly these days? 🇪🇺✨

  6. Seems like the U.S. has gone from being the big brother to the awkward cousin at the family reunion, eh? 🤔 At this rate, we might need a map to find our allies, or better yet, a GPS—because it’s getting tricky out here! 🗺️

Looks like the “land of the free” has become just another distant neighbor in Europe’s backyard. Quite the glow-up, eh? 😂

Looks like the Yanks have really done a stellar job of winning friends and influencing people, eh? 😂 Who knew “America First” would lead to Europe waving goodbye instead of waving flags?

Seems like the Yanks have swapped their capes for clown suits—who knew a military action in Venezuela could turn into a European soap opera? 😂 Now, we’re all just waiting for our American friends to realize that the EU isn’t just their sidekick anymore; we might just be the main act! 🍿

The U.S. must be thrilled to find out it’s gone from “the land of the free” to “the land of the frenemy” in mere months—who knew tariffs could create such warm feelings? 😂 Maybe they should start handing out “best frenemy” awards at the next summit!

Guess the U.S. is the new kid on the block that nobody wants to play with anymore, eh? 🤷‍♂️ Must be tough for Trump to realize that his “America First” is more like “Europe Last” – at least we know who to thank for the extra tariffs! 😂

Seems like the U.S. is pulling a classic “look at me” move while Europe’s just rolling its eyes and updating its party guest list. 🤷‍♂️ Guess it’s time for a Euro trip, but this time with less Uncle Sam and more croissants! 🥐

Seems like in the grand game of geopolitics, the U.S. is now the ‘that mate’ nobody invites to the pub anymore—too many dodgy moves and not enough round-buying. 😂 Cheers to the EU for finally figuring out it’s not a crime to look out for your own interests! 🍻
