The Srebrenica Flower Blooms at the United Nations

Munira Subašić, president of the Mothers’ Association of Srebrenica and Žepa, addressed over 100 people in New York, highlighting the murder of Bosnian Muslim men and boys in Srebrenica. For 30 years, she has advocated for the victims of the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide.

The marble flower with 11 white petals and a green center was inaugurated as a memorial, symbolizing the innocence of the victims and the hope for new beginnings. Despite past horrors, survivors raised their children without hatred. Subašić’s grandson, Karim, symbolizes this new generation, having lost family members in the genocide.

Karim expressed pride in his grandmother’s perseverance and hopes for continued efforts to prevent future atrocities. UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohamed emphasized the monument’s role in opposing historical denial and distortion. Chaloka Beyani, Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, highlighted the global commitment to remembrance and prevention.

The Srebrenica Memorial Flower, a gift from Bosnia and Herzegovina to the UN, stands near the Kwibuka Flame, commemorating the 1994 Rwandan genocide against the Tutsi, underscoring a global warning against future genocides.

Oh great, just what we need—a flower at the UN to remind us of tragedies, like a bouquet at a funeral. Next, shall we plant a tree for every bureaucracy that fails to act? 🌳💁‍♂️

Imagine that, a marble flower at the UN! Just what we need—more decorative reminders of past tragedies instead of actual solutions. 🌸🙄

  5. Just what we needed, another flower in the UN garden – because clearly, nothing says “we remember” quite like a marble sculpture. 🌼💼 Guess we’ll just water it with our tears and hope for a sprinkle of actual change!

  7. Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “let’s remember past tragedies” quite like a marble flower at the UN—because who wouldn’t want their memories carved in stone? 🌸🙄
