Brussels – European Union leaders Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa emphasized on Thursday that the United States and Europe are “stronger together,” in light of comments made by President-elect Donald Trump regarding Greenland, which led to “misunderstanding” among Europeans.
“We anticipate a constructive relationship with the upcoming American administration, rooted in our shared values and mutual interests. In an increasingly complex world, Europe and the United States are more resilient when united,” stated the President of the European Commission and the President of the European Council in similar posts on X.
Trump’s recent comments included a threat to annex Greenland, which is a territory of Denmark, a country that is part of both the EU and NATO.
In response to inquiries on this issue, European Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas reiterated the importance of respecting Greenland’s “sovereignty and territorial integrity.” She also acknowledged that it was “good” to see the President-elect showing interest in Arctic matters.
