Brussels – On Wednesday, the European Commission sought “clarifications” and condemned the “unjustified” sanctions placed by the Trump administration on former commissioner Thierry Breton from France, along with four other European officials dedicated to robust tech regulation and combating disinformation.
These five individuals have been barred from entering the United States and are accused by the State Department of “censorship” that harms American interests.
Berlin has labeled these measures as “unacceptable,” while French President Emmanuel Macron described them as “intimidation and coercion against European digital sovereignty.”
Madrid stated that it is “fundamental for democracy in Europe” to ensure a “safe digital space,” expressing solidarity with Thierry Breton.
The Commission in Brussels announced that it has “requested clarifications from the American authorities.” It added that “if necessary, we will respond swiftly and decisively to protect our regulatory autonomy against these unjustified actions,” as stated in a release.
