The presentation provides insights into the beliefs of a major U.S. figure at the forefront of Silicon Valley’s ideological transition, melding Christian conservatism with radical libertarianism. Thiel was invited by philosopher Chantal Delsol.
Based on presentation notes seen by POLITICO, Thiel described the Antichrist as more than a medieval myth, linking it and the apocalypse to “the end of modernity,” which he believes is underway.
Thiel suggested the Antichrist would utilize fears of nuclear armageddon, climate change, or AI threats to manipulate a “frightened population,” mentioning Greta Thunberg as a possible example.
The 58-year-old, identifying as a “classic liberal” and “moderate Orthodox Christian,” had discussed the Antichrist in San Francisco last year and with The New York Times. He noted the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences as a rare venue for such a discussion.
Two attendees told POLITICO they were not impressed by the talk. One labeled it “disjointed,” while another remarked on the extensive references to the Antichrist. A third attendee admitted to not understanding much of the content.
