Swiss Vote Enshrines Right to Cash in Constitution

Swiss Federal Council member Karin Keller-Sutter revealed the vote results at a press conference on Sunday evening.

This decision will see Switzerland align with Hungary, Slovakia, and Slovenia, who have enshrined the right to use cash in their constitutions. Austria is also contemplating a similar move as payment methods increasingly shift to digital, a change accelerated by the pandemic.

This trend has fueled conspiracy theories about potential government control through the elimination of cash. The European Central Bank’s initiative to create a digital euro has intensified such concerns, leading to a proposal by the EU’s executive body to protect physical cash within its societies.

In Switzerland, cash payments have decreased over the past decade. In 2017, over 70% of payments at the register were made with cash, a figure that dropped to 30% in 2024, according to the Swiss National Bank data.

Previously, the Swiss Freedom Movement initiated campaigns aiming to remove unpopular government ministers, prohibit electronic voting, and ensure protection for citizens choosing not to vaccinate against Covid-19; however, these proposals did not reach the ballot.

Looks like Switzerland is taking a cue from Hungary and friends—because nothing screams “freedom” quite like making sure we can still buy our fondue with crumpled bills! 💸🇨🇭

Just when you thought money couldn’t get any more old-fashioned, Switzerland goes ahead and puts cash in the constitution! 🤷‍♂️ Next up, the right to a good cuppa and a side of yodeling, I suppose. 💰🇨🇭

Just what we needed, a constitutional right to cash in a world where you can pay for a croissant with your phone! 💸 Next, maybe we’ll enshrine the right to wear socks with sandals. 😂

  6. Oh, brilliant! Just what we needed—cash enshrined in the constitution! Because, you know, nothing says “we’re moving forward” like a shiny new law to protect good old paper money. 💸🙄

Looks like Switzerland’s just become the cash-loving hipster of Europe! 🤑 Next, they’ll be wearing fedoras and sipping lattes while counting their coins, eh?

Cash in the Constitution? Brilliant! 🤦‍♂️ Just what we need, a shiny new right to stuff our wallets with notes while the rest of Europe zips ahead to digital bliss. Who wouldn’t want to carry around a small fortune in their pocket like it’s 1985? 💸
