Stockholm – Vattenfall, the Swedish state-owned energy company, has submitted a request for state aid to the government through its project company, Videberg Kraft AB, to establish new nuclear power.
The proposal includes plans for three to five smaller reactors to be built on the Värö Peninsula in Varberg Municipality, the site of the Ringhals nuclear power plant.
“The next step is to start discussions with the Government Offices regarding state aid,” states Desirée Comstedt, head of new nuclear power at Vattenfall and CEO of Videberg Kraft.
“This is excellent news for Sweden,” remarks Minister for Financial Markets Niklas Wykman (Moderate Party), likening it to a Christmas gift for the Swedish people—a beacon of hope.
Following negotiations with the Government Offices, the proposal will be sent to the EU Commission for assessment to ensure compliance with state aid regulations.
“There are numerous stages in this process, but receiving the application is a significant milestone,” notes Minister for Energy and Business Ebba Busch (Christian Democrats), describing it as a “pleasant piece of news” just in time for Christmas.
