Stockholm – The Swedish government is set to establish a customs hotline aimed at assisting businesses that are feeling uncertain about the evolving U.S. trade tariffs, according to Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
“This initiative will support companies that may not have kept up with the latest developments,” he stated in an interview with Swedish Radio.
“The hotline will provide businesses with the most current information regarding applicable regulations. It’s unrealistic to expect every exporting company to constantly monitor the news,” he added.
In the past week, U.S. President Donald Trump has rapidly imposed, announced, and rescinded trade tariffs, leading to significant declines in the stock market.
Currently, the EU is included in Trump’s decision to pause punitive tariffs on countries that have not retaliated. This means that, in addition to existing U.S. tariffs on steel, aluminum, and automobiles, the EU will face only the base tariff of 10 percent that Trump announced last week for all countries.
While the tariffs may be paused, efforts are still underway to devise additional countermeasures.
“All options remain on the table,” stated EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Although the situation remains uncertain, Kristersson expresses cautious optimism, noting that the EU, as the largest trading bloc globally, holds a strong negotiating position against the United States.
