Brussels (ANSA) – Europe is intensifying its efforts to control migration. At the recent Justice and Home Affairs Council, the 27 member states approved three significant components of the legislative framework that supports the Migration Pact, including a major reform set to take effect next June. These components address regulations on returns, define safe third countries, and establish the EU list of safe countries of origin.
This tightening of regulations will legally permit the establishment of ‘return hubs’ in other countries, contingent upon meeting specific safety criteria for migrants. The approval of the Albania model is a significant step, allowing it to function not only as a registration center but also as a return center, which has been met with “satisfaction” from Minister Matteo Piantedosi.
According to a report from the EU executive, Italy is one of four countries required to receive (mandatory) solidarity from other member states. While capitals can choose between physically relocating a portion of migrants or offering financial contributions or alternative measures, reports indicate a strong preference for financial contributions to avoid taking in new migrants, although a surprising number of countries have expressed willingness to accept relocations as of December 8.
