Strategic Collaboration with the EIB for Environmental Investments in Europe

Skopje – Today, Muamet Hodza, the Minister of Environment and Spatial Planning, met with Bjorn Gabriel, Head of the European Investment Bank (EIB) Office in North Macedonia. They discussed the continuation of their collaboration, particularly regarding strategic projects related to environmental and water infrastructure.

According to the Ministry, Minister Hodza highlighted the importance of EIB’s ongoing support in projects that enhance citizens’ quality of life and safeguard the environment.

Bjorn Gabriel stated that the EIB, as a European Union-owned institution and the largest multilateral bank, is dedicated to funding sustainable projects that align with the EU’s strategic objectives, focusing primarily on Europe.

The Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning and the North Macedonian Government have entered into two loan agreements with the EIB: €68 million for the “Construction of a Wastewater Treatment Plant for the City of Skopje” and €50 million for the “Improvement of Water Infrastructure in Municipalities,” benefiting 80 municipalities across the nation. Additionally, the EIB offers technical assistance grants, securing €69 million from the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF) for the Skopje wastewater treatment plant, managed through the EIB as the lead bank of the project.

-Bjorn reiterated the EIB’s commitment to fully support project implementation, emphasizing close collaboration with project teams, regular coordination meetings, and the EIB’s role as a link between EU institutions and the North Macedonian Government. Both parties agreed to continue their intensive cooperation to ensure the successful execution of priority environmental projects, as stated by the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning.
