Stocker aims to enhance the European Council

Vienna (APA) – Austrian Federal Chancellor Christian Stocker (ÖVP) aims to enhance the role of EU heads of state and government. At the ÖVP’s New Year event in Vienna on Friday, Stocker proposed that the European Council be granted the right to initiate legislative proposals, allowing it to take action independently of the Commission’s timeline. He expressed strong support for Ukraine while also highlighting the need to establish communication channels with Moscow to contribute to peace efforts.

Additionally, Stocker announced that he intends for the Austrian public to make decisions regarding military service reform. He affirmed that the outcome of a referendum on this issue would be binding for the government. He also noted that a militia system lacking mandatory training cannot fulfill the armed forces’ needs. In Austria, military service is compulsory, with an option to complete a nine-month civilian service as an alternative to the six-month basic military service. (30.1.2026)

  1. Oh sure, because letting the European Council take the wheel is exactly what we need—more chefs in the kitchen, right? 🙄 Just what I was thinking; why not throw in a referendum on what to have for lunch while we’re at it? 🍽️

So, Stocker wants to give the European Council a shiny new toy to play with, eh? 🎩 Because nothing says “efficient governance” like more cooks in the kitchen, especially when we all know the recipe’s already a bit dodgy! 🤷‍♂️

  3. Oh, brilliant! Just what we need—more politicians with grand ideas while the rest of us are just trying to figure out our parking tickets. Maybe we should just let Stocker handle the EU Summit with a nice cup of coffee and some strudel. ☕️😏

Oh, brilliant! A politician wants to give more power to his buddies in the European Council—because who doesn’t love a few more cooks in the kitchen, right? 🙄 And a referendum on military service? That’ll totally clear things up; let’s just hope they don’t ask the public about their favorite schnitzel instead! 🍻

Isn’t it charming how Stocker thinks granting more power to the European Council will spice things up? I mean, what could possibly go wrong with giving a bunch of politicians the green light to legislate at their own pace? 😂

Oh great, now the European Council gets to play lawmaker too—just what we needed, more cooks in the kitchen! 🍲 This should make negotiations as smooth as a schnitzel on a Sunday, right? 😏
