Merz expressed concerns that Israel’s heightened actions in Gaza make achieving objectives like hostage release and Hamas disarmament “increasingly difficult,” according to a statement.
Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares criticized Israel’s military escalation in Gaza in a post on X, stating that it would lead to “further destruction and suffering.”
Israel’s strategy involves disarming Hamas, returning hostages taken by Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023, demilitarizing Gaza under Israeli control, and establishing a new administration excluding Hamas and the Palestinian Authority as outlined by the Israeli government.
Before a security cabinet meeting, Netanyahu confirmed in a Fox News interview plans for Israel to take full control of Gaza, though officially the plan only cites Gaza City.
In the interview, Netanyahu explained plans to remove Hamas, liberate the population, and introduce civilian governance: “We intend to, in order to assure our security.”
He added, “We don’t intend to keep it. We aim to establish a security perimeter and transfer it to Arab forces that will manage effectively and improve life for Gazans.”
Yair Lapid, Israel’s opposition leader and former prime minister, criticized the security cabinet’s decision as a “disaster” in an post on X, saying it aligns with Hamas’ agenda, leaving Israel “without a goal” in a useless occupation.
