Doyle, who served as Starmer’s first director of communications in Downing Street, recently joined the House of Lords after his peerage was announced in December.
Georgia Gould, one of Starmer’s ministers, told Sky News that Downing Street was unaware of Doyle’s campaigning for Morton before granting him the peerage. She added that the prime minister has reconsidered the situation to uphold high standards in public life.
Labour Party Chair Anna Turley told Sky that Doyle should lose his peerage due to a lack of transparency. She stated that the information provided at the time of the decision was inaccurate.
On Tuesday, Doyle announced he would no longer take the Labour whip. He acknowledged campaigning for Morton in 2017 after charges were made, but before Morton’s conviction.
