Spanish Socialists’ #MeToo Movement Challenges Sánchez Government

Women are a crucial component of the party’s voter base: Female voters generally have higher election participation rates than men and have historically supported the Socialists. However, surveys from the national polling institute show that women are becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the party. Following the release of the Ábalos recordings, a poll indicated that support for the Socialists among female voters dropped from 26.2 percent to 19.4 percent.

Pilar Bernabé, the party’s equality secretary, acknowledged on Friday that the surge in harassment complaints marked a “before and after” moment for the Socialists, emphasizing the need to demonstrate zero tolerance for abuse. “Sexism is incompatible with Socialism,” she stated.

The challenges to the party’s credentials are unwelcome as it confronts multiple corruption investigations. Besides ongoing investigations into Ábalos and Cerdán — both of whom were jailed without bond last month — this week saw the arrest of former Socialist Party member Leire Díez and Vicente Fernández, the former head of the state-owned agency overseeing Spain’s business holdings, for alleged embezzlement and influence peddling. During their bail hearings, Díez chose to remain silent, while Fernández denied any wrongdoing.

Days later, Spain’s elite anti-corruption unit raided several agencies under the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, and the Spanish Postal Service headquarters as part of a related investigation into alleged public contract rigging.

Can Sánchez carry on?

During a campaign event on Sunday, party members urged Sánchez to take action. “Take a firm hand to the harassers, the womanizers, the chauvinists!” said Irene Pozas, head of the Socialist Youth in the province of Cáceres. “Don’t hold back, Pedro: The women of the Socialist Party must not have any cause for regret!”

  1. Looks like the Socialists are really nailing it—who knew harassment complaints and criminal charges could be the new trend in politics? 😂 Maybe they should put that on their campaign posters: “Zero tolerance for abuse, but only when it suits us!”

  2. Oh, brilliant! A party known for its corruption is now tackling harassment like a bull in a china shop – what a sight to behold! 🎭 If only they spent as much time on actual governance as they do on dodging scandals! 😂

  3. Seems like the Socialists are having a bit of a “come to Jesus” moment—nothing like a few harassment complaints and jail time to spice up the political scene, eh? 😂 Maybe they’ll throw in a tapas menu next to the party manifesto to win back the ladies! 🍷

  4. Aye, nothing screams “we care about women” like a good ol’ corruption scandal buffet, eh? 🍷 Who needs credibility when you’ve got a catchy hashtag?

Looks like the Socialists are really on the ball with this whole ‘zero tolerance’ thing—who knew they’d be better at dodging accountability than addressing it? 🤔 Perhaps they should just stick to their day job of avoiding scandals instead of tackling them. 🥴

Just what we needed, another “before and after” moment from the Socialists—sounded more like a bad telenovela plot than genuine reform. Perhaps next, they’ll come out with a line of “Zero Tolerance” mugs for the loyal voters, eh? 😏☕️

Isn’t it just delightful when a party known for their “zero tolerance” suddenly finds themselves knee-deep in scandals? Must be tough to juggle harassment claims and corruption investigations while trying to keep the voters happy—cheers to the Socialists for keeping it all so entertaining! 🍷

  9. Looks like the Socialists are really sorting out the “male” in their “male-dominated” hangout! Who knew a little scandal could lead to such a fancy “zero tolerance” slogan? 🤔

  10. Isn’t it just delightful to see a party that prides itself on equality getting tangled in its own hypocrisy? 🍷 Maybe they should add “professional jugglers” to their résumé for all this spinning they’re doing! 😏

Looks like the Socialists have found themselves in a right pickle, eh? Nothing says “we care” like a scandal wrapped in a nice bow of hypocrisy. 😂

Looks like the Socialists are trying to turn a new leaf—good luck with that, lads! 😂 With all this drama, they might as well start handing out “how to win friends and influence people” books at their next rally!

Seems like the Socialists are really hitting the nail on the head with their “zero tolerance” for sexism—just what every voter wants to see while the ship is sinking! 😂 Good luck, Pedro, hope your holidays come with a side of redemption!

Looks like Sánchez has quite the juggling act with scandals flying left and right—maybe he should take a page from a circus act and start practicing his tightrope walking! 🎪 But then again, who doesn’t love a good political drama mixed with a hint of sexism, right? 😂

Just what we needed, a Spanish soap opera with a side of sexism and corruption—who knew the Socialists were auditioning for the next big drama on Netflix? 🎭✨ Keep it coming, Sánchez, it’s just like a fine Rioja: a bit too aged and leaving a sour aftertaste! 🍷

Looks like the Spanish Socialists are really stepping up their game in the ‘who can do the worst at handling harassment’ competition. One would think they were competing for a gold medal in embarrassing scandals! 😂

Typical Spanish politics, eh? One minute you’re trying to champion equality, and the next you’re knee-deep in scandal—like a tapas bar that’s suddenly run out of patatas bravas! 🍷🥴

Looks like the Socialists are really on the ball… juggling scandals and a crumbling support base like a seasoned circus act. 🎪 But hey, at least they’re finally acknowledging that sexism isn’t exactly the best marketing strategy, right? 😂
