Economy Ministers from Spain and Italy Urge Calm as Trump Tariffs Spark EU Debate
While several major EU nations push for a more aggressive response to U.S. trade tariffs, the economy ministers of Spain and Italy are advocating for dialogue and restraint.
Spain’s Minister of Economy, Trade and Business, Carlos Cuerpo, emphasized the importance of a diplomatic path forward, stating, “We still are calling for a negotiated solution,” according to a report from Bloomberg on Saturday.
Italian Economy and Finance Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti echoed similar sentiments during a conference in Cernobbio, near Lake Como. He cautioned against overreacting, urging fellow EU leaders not to “hit the panic button.”
“We must try to keep a cool head, evaluate the impact, and avoid a policy of retaliatory tariffs which would just be damaging for all, and especially for us,” Giorgetti said.
Their comments come amid growing tension between the EU and the U.S. after the reintroduction of trade tariffs by former President Donald Trump. While France and Germany have signaled a desire for a firmer stance, Italy and Spain are calling for negotiation to avoid escalating the dispute.
