Bratislava – Andrej Danko, Chairman of the Slovak National Party (SNS), has expressed his expectation that Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár (Smer-SD) will adhere to principles and abstain from supporting another package of anti-Russian sanctions within the EU. He referenced a resolution from the National Council (NR) of the Slovak Republic that advises government officials against backing such sanctions, in addition to the position held by Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD). Danko made these remarks during a press conference in the NR SR on Friday, as reported by TASR.
“The National Council of the Slovak Republic has passed a resolution that, in my view, not only recommends but mandates that government members never vote in favor of anti-Russian sanctions again. Therefore, I appreciate the Prime Minister’s declaration that they will no longer support any anti-Russian sanctions,” Danko stated.
Danko also expressed concern over the prospect of a total ban on importing Russian energy resources to Slovakia. “I cannot fathom the European Union prohibiting us from acquiring nuclear fuel, which is irreplaceable in our nuclear power plants. A ban that harms our economy by halting Russian gas supplies and cutting us off suddenly would lead to economic catastrophe not only for Slovakia but for other countries, including Hungary,” he remarked.
The SNS leader contends that even a delay in banning the import of Russian gas, nuclear fuel, or oil is not a viable solution, as it would lead to significantly higher energy costs. “The state would have no means to subsidize these costs,” he noted.
Danko plans to suggest to the Prime Minister the organization of a round table focused on safeguarding Slovakia’s national interests, potentially involving both the coalition and the opposition, aiming for constitutional changes to reduce Slovakia’s obligations under certain EU decisions.
“It should be noted that as the pressure mounts on politicians resisting Russian sanctions, it jeopardizes their political future, security, and may even lead to legal consequences,” Danko added. (June 13)
“I cannot imagine that the EU would prohibit us from purchasing nuclear fuel, which cannot be replaced in our nuclear power plants. That they would harm our economy by stopping the supply of Russian gas, the purchase of Russian raw materials, and cut us off from these supplies overnight. That would mean economic catastrophe for both the Slovak Republic and some other states, including Hungary.” Andrej Danko.
