Slovenia urges the EU to safeguard international tribunals

Luxembourg – At the EU Justice Ministers’ meeting on Monday, Justice Minister Andreja Katič underscored the EU’s commitment to safeguarding the International Criminal Court (ICC) from political influences and sanctions. Slovenia urges a united and principled EU stance in support of independent international justice, according to the Ministry of Justice.

Katič emphasized the importance of the rule of law during the Luxembourg meeting, asserting that it should not be compromised for strategic or economic gains. “To genuinely defend democracy, the rule of law must remain our constitutional cornerstone – the basis of our strategic and economic direction, rather than being subordinated to those interests,” she stated.

Following the U.S. sanctions imposed in early June on four ICC judges, including Slovenian Beti Hohler, Slovenia, along with Belgium, expressed concerns that sanctioning international judges and prosecutors, as well as independent journalists, undermines core European principles – the rule of law, separation of powers, and respect for human rights, the ministry reported.

The justice ministers also addressed issues such as combating impunity for crimes in Ukraine, the future of the Eurojust agency, access to data in criminal investigations, and the safeguarding of democratic space amid rising hate speech and political violence.

Additionally, they approved a decision to sign the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime. Slovenia, which has played an active role in negotiating the convention’s text, supports this decision and plans to sign the convention later this month in Hanoi, the ministry noted. (October 13)

Oh, lovely to see Slovenia lecturing the EU on rule of law while juggling the existential crisis that is our geopolitical climate. Who knew they were the moral compass of Europe? 😂

Looks like Slovenia is on a mission to teach the EU what “principled stance” means—must be nice having the luxury of ideals while the rest of us are just trying to keep our heads above water. 🙄💼

Seems like Slovenia’s trying to win the EU’s “Best in Show” award for political correctness—who knew safeguarding the ICC would become the new trendy accessory? Bravo, Andreja, let’s hope the rule of law doesn’t go out of style! 😏🇸🇮

  4. Seems like Slovenia’s got a real knack for playing the moral high ground—just what we need, eh? Next, they’ll be suggesting we all wear capes and call ourselves superheroes. 😏

Oh great, Slovenia’s giving us a masterclass in ‘how to win friends and influence judges’ 😂. Sounds like a solid strategy—standing up for justice while juggling international sanctions like they’re hot potatoes! 🍟

Isn’t it charming how Slovenia thinks the EU can actually uphold the rule of law while juggling political elephants? Perhaps next, they’ll suggest we serve tea and biscuits to the ICC judges while we’re at it. 🍵🦙

Seems like Slovenia’s found a new hobby—pleading for the EU to remember its principles while juggling political sanctions like a circus act. 🎪 Just what we need, more high-level meetings where everyone agrees to disagree while sipping overpriced lattes. 🍵

Oh sure, because nothing says “independent justice” like a group of politicians arguing about who gets to throw the biggest tantrum over a few judges getting sanctions. 🤦‍♂️ Just another day in the EU, where rules are just suggestions, right? 😂
