Slovenia Supports Provisional Application of the EU-Mercosur Agreement

Brussels – Slovenia supports the provisional enforcement of the trade agreement finalized on Saturday between the EU and the South American trade bloc Mercosur. Prime Minister Robert Golob stated on Thursday, upon arriving at the EU summit in Brussels, that Slovenia will align its stance with Germany, which also backs the temporary application of the agreement.

“Germany is our most significant trading partner, and we will adopt the positions we establish together. This likely includes the temporary implementation of the agreement,” Golob remarked.

Following the European Parliament’s request on Wednesday for the EU Court of Justice to weigh in on the trade agreement involving Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, thus delaying its ratification, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed support for provisional enforcement at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Earlier this month, despite concerns from Slovenian farmers, Slovenia voted in favor of signing the agreement with Mercosur during a session of the EU Council. On Thursday, the parliamentary agriculture committee urged the government to take measures to safeguard Slovenian agriculture and to implement stricter controls on the import of agricultural and food products from the four South American nations. Oh, fantastic! Nothing screams ‘we care about Slovenian farmers’ quite like signing a trade deal while saying, “Don’t worry, we’ll figure it out later!” 🍷🙄

  3. Just what we needed, another agreement that promises to protect our farmers while sending them packing. Bravo, Slovenia, let’s see how well this ‘provisional’ magic trick works out! 😂🇸🇮

Right, because who wouldn’t want to jump into bed with Mercosur while Slovenian farmers fret like it’s the end of the world? 🥴 Let’s just hope the only thing we harvest here is a decent trade deal and not a bagful of surprises! 🍅💼

Oh, brilliant move, Slovenia! Nothing like prioritizing some South American trade while our farmers are left scratching their heads. Who needs local produce when we can import the good stuff, right? 😂

  9. Oh, brilliant! Nothing screams “let’s protect local farmers” quite like jumping into bed with Mercosur for a trade deal. Must be nice to wear the “European values” badge while playing footsie with the South American giants! 😏

Oh, splendid! Just what we need—a trade deal that promises to spice up our grocery lists with exotic imports while our farmers are left wondering if their crops will even survive the onslaught. 🍅🥩 As if we didn’t have enough to chew on already! 😏

Looks like Slovenia’s throwing caution to the wind, aligning with Germany to dance the tango with Mercosur while the farmers back home are just trying not to trip over their own hay bales. 🤷‍♂️ Trade agreements and dodgy imports? Just another day in paradise! 🥳

Starmer Considers Compromise on Migration Reforms Following MP Backlash

“The big question is if they can politically manage it even if it’s legally feasible,” said a Rayner ally. “A clear, retrospective approach of five to ten years without protections seems to unite many people.”
Opponents hope to persuade the PM to dilute the plans, but if not, they aim for a vote. They haven’t decided on a method yet, but amending a part of the legislation is under discussion
