Sint-Agatha-Berchem Extends Ban on Gatherings Until May 12

Sint-Agatha-Berchem (Eurotoday) – Mayor Christian Lamouline extended the gathering ban in Sint-Agatha-Berchem until May 12th, 2025, due to 160 drug cases since mid-2023. Police patrol Moderne Wijk, fining violators up to €500.

The mayor of Sint-Agatha-Berchem, Belgium Christian Lamouline, has decided to keep a rule that stops groups of people from gathering in certain areas. This rule was originally set to end on March 9th, 2025, but has now been extended until May 12th, 2025.

According to the rule, no more than blank”>2 people can be together in the Ravotterijstraat, Samenwerkersplein, Victor Bourgeoissteeg, and a vacant lot near those streets. Those who violate the rule can face fines of up to €500.

The mayor made this decision due to persistent issues in these areas, including drug-related activities. Police have recorded approximately 160 instances of drug dealing on the streets since mid-2023.

Why is Sint-Agatha-Berchem extending its gathering ban?

Officials reported that Moderne Wijk has also experienced other disturbances, such as excessive noise, groups of young people loitering late at night, and incidents of vandalism, including a fire in an abandoned building. The mayor hopes to improve the situation and prevent further deterioration.

To inform residents about the extended rule, authorities distributed notices explaining the reasons for the decision and emphasizing that the measure aims to enhance public safety. While some residents support the rule for security reasons, others question its long-term impact on addressing youth-related issues and crime.

Between February 5th and March 10th, 2025, authorities recorded 34 violations of the gathering ban in Moderne Wijk. Eight of these reports involved breaches of the gathering restrictions, while the remaining cases were linked to other offenses, such as drug dealings.

Police will continue checking IDs in the restricted areas, including Ravotterijstraat, Samenwerkersplein, and Victor Bourgeoissteeg. Officers have the authority to stop individuals they suspect of breaking the rules. Law enforcement officials stated that these measures are intended to enhance safety and deter street-level drug activities.
