Authorities Investigate North Sea Collision That Left One Sailor Presumed Dead

Officials from the United States, Portugal, and the United Kingdom are continuing their investigation into a collision in the North Sea that resulted in both vessels catching fire and prompted a large-scale rescue effort.

The British government stated on Tuesday that there was “no evidence” of foul play in the incident and confirmed that one sailor is presumed dead. According to CBS News, an anonymous American sailor aboard the Stena Immaculate reported that “a massive ship came from out of the blue” and struck the tanker.

Detective Chief Superintendent Craig Nicholson, the lead investigator, provided an update Tuesday night, announcing that a suspect had been taken into custody. “Extensive work has already been carried out, and we are collaborating closely with our partners to determine what happened while also supporting those affected,” he said.

Nicholson also confirmed the arrest of a 59-year-old man on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter in relation to the crash. This development follows the completion of search efforts by HM Coastguard for the missing crew member from the Solong.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
