Shein Implementing Age Verification in EU Following Sex Dolls Controversy

“All age-restricted products” will require age verification, Zhu stated.

The Commission serves as the main regulator for Shein under the Digital Services Act, an EU law designed to mitigate online platform risks for users. Shein is identified as a Very Large Online Platform, with over 45 million users, and may incur fines up to 6 percent of its global annual revenue for rule violations.

The Commission did not immediately reply to POLITICO’s request for comment.

Shein is also experimenting with the Commission’s age verification app, sometimes referred to as a “mini wallet,” Zhu explained. This app blueprint for online age verification was created by the Commission and is currently undergoing testing in six EU countries.

“It was completely unacceptable what happened,” Zhu commented, addressing the presence of child-like sex dolls and other illegal content. However, it “is not the first time this has occurred on a marketplace; it has affected multiple marketplaces,” Zhu remarked.

Oh, fantastic! Just what we needed—age verification for a site that’s basically a candy store for fast fashion. I suppose next they’ll be asking for your birth certificate to buy a pair of socks! 😂

Looks like Shein is finally taking a break from selling questionable fashion choices to focus on age verification—who knew they had a conscience? 😂 Next thing you know, they’ll be serving tea and crumpets with those age checks! 🍵🧁

Oh, brilliant! Nothing screams “responsible retail” like a last-minute age verification after a scandal. 🎭 I suppose it takes a few plastic dolls to wake up the regulators! 😂

Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “we care” like a fancy age verification app while peddling questionable products to the masses. Guess we’ll just wait for the next scandal, eh? 😂🤦‍♂️

So now Shein’s gonna check IDs like a bouncer at a dodgy nightclub? 🤔 Can’t wait to see how their age verification app works—bet it’s a real gem, like a Swiss watch made of jelly! 😂

Typical, innit? Just when we thought we were safe from dodgy dolls, the EU swoops in like a knight in shining armor, waving its age-verification wand. 🙄 Let’s hope this “mini wallet” isn’t just another excuse to snoop on our shopping habits!

Oh, brilliant move, Shein! 🤦‍♂️ Because nothing screams “trustworthy marketplace” like a mini wallet for verifying if your buyers are old enough to handle your wares—let’s just hope they don’t mistake it for a wallet for their pocket money! 😂

Looks like Shein’s finally catching on to the idea that selling dodgy stuff to kids might not be the best business model. 🤷‍♂️ Guess the age verification app will save them from a world of fines—so thoughtful of them! 😂

  12. Guess it took a scandal involving dolls for Shein to realize that age verification isn’t just for pubs in Dublin. Can’t wait for the grand unveiling of the “mini wallet”—I hear it’s just a fancier way to say “let’s put this off until tomorrow” 😂.

So, let me get this straight – we’re putting age checks on Shein now? Because nothing screams “responsible shopping” like a mini wallet, right? 😂

Funny how a “mini wallet” is now the key to keeping us all safe from age-inappropriate purchases. Next up, I suppose they’re going to demand a full-on ID check for buying a pair of socks! 😂🧦

  15. So, Shein’s finally playing the age game, eh? Must be nice to pick and choose a regulatory blueprint while dodging fines like a pro at a European football match! 😂💼

Looks like Shein’s finally decided to join the grown-up table, eh? 🤷‍♂️ Age verification? Brilliant idea, especially when you’ve already been serving up a side of controversy with those dollies! Just what we needed—another app to check if we’re old enough to make questionable fashion choices. 😂

Isn’t it just delightful how Shein is finally joining the party with age verification? 😏 I suppose they needed a scandal involving sex dolls to realize that kids shouldn’t be shopping for “adult” items online. Classic!

Fancy that! Just when you thought online shopping couldn’t get any more thrilling, Shein decides to play babysitter. 🤔 Who knew age verification could be the next big thing after “I’ll have a pint, please!”? 🍻

  19. Well, isn’t that just delightful? I can’t wait for my 12-year-old niece to whip out her ID before buying a pair of socks on Shein, all thanks to the “mini wallet” – because nothing says responsible shopping like a touch of bureaucracy! 😂

  20. Oh, how delightful! A fashion platform now moonlighting as a babysitter—next, they’ll be handing out bedtime stories with your next pair of leggings. 🛍️💁‍♂️
