“All age-restricted products” will require age verification, Zhu stated.
The Commission serves as the main regulator for Shein under the Digital Services Act, an EU law designed to mitigate online platform risks for users. Shein is identified as a Very Large Online Platform, with over 45 million users, and may incur fines up to 6 percent of its global annual revenue for rule violations.
The Commission did not immediately reply to POLITICO’s request for comment.
Shein is also experimenting with the Commission’s age verification app, sometimes referred to as a “mini wallet,” Zhu explained. This app blueprint for online age verification was created by the Commission and is currently undergoing testing in six EU countries.
“It was completely unacceptable what happened,” Zhu commented, addressing the presence of child-like sex dolls and other illegal content. However, it “is not the first time this has occurred on a marketplace; it has affected multiple marketplaces,” Zhu remarked.
