Šefović: Increasing Global Interest in Strengthening Trade Relations with the EU

Brussels – Foreign trade partners are counting on the EU to uphold its strong reputation as one of the leading global trading entities during tariff negotiations with the USA. This insight was shared by Maroš Šefčovič, the EU Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, in an interview with Slovak media in Brussels. He noted that in recent months, numerous economically significant nations have expressed heightened interest in enhancing their trade ties with the EU, according to a report by TASR.

Šefčovič highlighted the completion of a trade agreement with Mercosur nations at the end of last year, as well as the conclusion of talks aimed at modernizing and expanding relations with Switzerland. He also mentioned the successful finalization of negotiations regarding the modernization of the EU’s global agreement with Mexico in January, and the recent conclusion of discussions on a digital trade agreement with South Korea earlier this week.

“Since the emergence of tensions and uncertainties in trade from the United States, we have witnessed a substantial interest in fast-tracking free trade agreements with the EU,” he remarked. He pointed out that in addition to Mercosur, Switzerland, Mexico, and South Korea, countries within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)—including Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines—have also demonstrated increased interest in forming trade agreements with the Union in recent months.

This trend is mirrored among the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations, and Šefčovič has recently held multiple working meetings with representatives from India.

“The interest is significant. These countries share our perspective on the current situation. They are seeking a reliable partner who is predictable, honors agreements, and they see that partner in us. We are encouraged by this, as it reassures us that, despite any tensions we may face in our relationship with the USA, our extensive network of agreements will ensure access to essential goods, raw materials, and agricultural products critical for the EU economy,” he elaborated.

He also expressed optimism that the EU would be able to establish normal trade conditions with the United States soon, noting that “the world’s largest trade relationship deserves that.” (March 13)

“I must say that since this tension and turbulence from the United States in the trade domain began, there is immense interest in accelerating free trade agreements with the EU.” – Maroš Šefčovič

Isn’t it just delightful how when the US throws a tantrum, everyone suddenly wants to be BFFs with the EU? Who knew being a reliable partner was such a hot commodity! 😂

Isn’t it charming how everyone suddenly wants to be best mates with the EU just because the States are throwing a tantrum? 🤷‍♂️ Guess they finally realized that there’s more to trade than just shouting across the Atlantic! 🥴

Oh, brilliant! Who knew trade relations could flourish like daisies in a field of chaos? 🌼 At this rate, we might even start charging for the privilege of negotiating with us! 😂

Looks like the EU’s trade game is on fire while the U.S. is just trying to figure out how to play chess with checkers—good luck with that, lads! 😂 Who knew that being predictable was such a charming quality in international relations?
