Moscow (Eurotoday) – Russia’s defence ministry has accused Ukraine of violating the Easter ceasefire declared by President Vladimir Putin over a thousand times, resulting in damage to infrastructure and impacting civilians.
According to the ministry, Ukrainian forces allegedly targeted Russian positions 444 times, with more than 900 drone strikes recorded during the truce period.
In contrast, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has countered the claims, stating that Russia is creating a misleading “impression” of a ceasefire while continuing military operations in several regions of Ukraine.
Is the Easter ceasefire political stagecraft?
Within the initial six hours of the ceasefire announced by Putin, President Zelensky reported 387 shellings, 19 ground attacks by Russian forces, and 290 drone deployments. No casualties were confirmed during that timeframe.
Putin had ordered Russian forces to suspend all military activity in Ukraine from 18:00 Moscow time (16:00 BST) on Saturday until midnight Sunday. Kyiv indicated it would honour the truce.
Was Putin’s truce a strategic move?
The late timing of the ceasefire announcement—just minutes before it was set to begin—cast doubt on the likelihood of a comprehensive halt to hostilities. Nonetheless, a relative calm was observed initially. Before Zelensky’s update on renewed hostilities, no Russian drones or fighter jets were reported over Ukrainian airspace by midnight Saturday.
Only one report suggested that a Russian warship equipped with missile systems had been deployed to the Black Sea. The southern port city of Odesa remained quiet. However, the night before Moscow’s declaration, air defences in the region were active as Russian drones blank”>approached from Russian-occupied Crimea.
On Sunday morning, Zelensky stated that Moscow was “trying to create a general impression of a ceasefire, but in some areas, it continues individual attempts to advance and inflict losses on Ukraine.”
The Ukrainian president further criticised Russia’s military actions, saying, “everywhere our warriors are responding as the enemy deserves, based on the specific combat situation.” He added later on Saturday—mere hours after the truce began:
“If Russia is now suddenly ready to genuinely participate in a format of full and unconditional silence, Ukraine will respond accordingly, mirroring Russia’s actions.”

Oh, brilliant strategy there, Vladimir! Who knew declaring a ceasefire could be just another way to keep your neighbours on their toes—what a masterclass in diplomacy! 🤦♂️

Oh, look at that! Russia’s got its very own tally board for ceasefire violations. Who knew they were so keen on counting? Maybe next they’ll launch a reality show: “Keeping Up with the Ceasefire!” 😂

Seems like Russia’s counting skills are sharper than their ceasefire tactics—1,000 violations? Perhaps they mistook “Easter” for “Easter egg hunt.” 🥚😏

Looks like Putin’s ceasefire is as reliable as a British summer—full of promises but mostly just damp! 😂 One minute it’s all “peace and quiet,” and the next, it’s back to “who can shell the most.” Classic! 🍵✨
