The escalating tension in the Middle East, particularly in Israel, has raised significant concerns among the many pilgrims and visitors currently in the Holy Land. The Romanian Patriarchate, known for its extensive pilgrimage initiatives, is actively aiding Romanian pilgrims affected by the conflict in Israel. In collaboration with its representation in the Holy Land and Romania’s state authorities, a plan for the safe evacuation of citizens has been organized. According to TRINITAS TV, the church’s television channel, several Romanian pilgrim groups have already been moved to safer areas. The primary evacuation route from Israel is through Egypt, as it remains the only accessible safe passage recently. Pilgrims are being transported by land to Israel’s southern border in the Gulf of Aqaba area, from where they cross into Egypt. From there, many are taken to Cairo or Sharm el-Sheikh, where flights are arranged to bring them back to Romania.
Archimandrite Father Ioan Meiu, the Romanian Patriarchate’s representative in the Holy Land, stated that the evacuation process has proceeded smoothly thus far. He noted that most individuals in conflict zones have managed to leave Israel safely. The cooperation between church and state institutions is deemed vital to the operation’s success.
Most Romanians in the Holy Land are there for pilgrimage. However, the deteriorating security situation has caused significant concern. Alarm sirens are sounding frequently in most Israeli cities, prompting local authorities to advise residents and visitors to remain alert and adhere to safety guidelines. The situation is under close watch by international institutions, and several countries have commenced repatriating their citizens.
