Refugee Aid Workers Call for EU Legal Action Against Berlin

Vienna – European refugee organizations have urged the EU Commission to commence infringement proceedings against Germany. They argue that the ongoing stationary border checks and the rejection of asylum seekers at German borders are “in clear contradiction to fundamental values and violate applicable EU law,” as stated in a letter released on Thursday by groups including Asylkoordination Österreich.

German measures erode trust in the EU

The letter highlights that the actions of the German federal government violate the rights of individuals seeking protection within the European Union after perilous journeys. Moreover, they assert that these actions jeopardize societal trust in the EU as a legal community. “National unilateral actions that overlook applicable EU law fundamentally contradict the principles of the European rule of law. They empower far-right movements across Europe, increase skepticism toward the EU, and contribute to a troubling trend of renationalization within the Union.”

As the Schengen area’s 40th anniversary approaches, the freedom of movement is significantly threatened. “Border controls do not deter individuals from seeking protection in the European Union; they merely render the journey more perilous. Furthermore, they inflict economic and social harm, incur high costs, and are not sustainable in the long run.” The European Union must demonstrate its commitment to upholding the rule of law above the might of individual nations.

This open letter is directed to EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner, and it is endorsed by representatives from civil society organizations in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Luxembourg, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the European Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE). Looks like Germany’s taken the “keep out” policy a bit too literally, eh? Maybe next they’ll put a bouncer at the border—who knew refugee aid would turn into a nightclub act? 🍻

Funny how the EU’s “freedom of movement” motto seems to come with an asterisk these days. Maybe Germany thinks “Schengen” is just a fancy word for “keep out”? 🤷‍♂️

Oh, look at Germany playing the border control game like it’s a sport! Maybe they think “Schengen” is just a fancy cocktail now? 🍹

  4. Oh, fantastic! Nothing like a good ol’ EU legal action to spice up the bureaucratic stew. I mean, why not just throw a blanket over the whole continent while we’re at it? 😂🛂

Oh great, just what we needed—another round of “Let’s ignore the EU law while patting ourselves on the back!” Bravo, Germany, really keeping the “united” in the EU. 🙄

Looks like Germany’s playing a lovely game of ‘let’s ignore EU laws’—who knew they were so fond of solo performances? 😂 Just wait until they realize the EU isn’t a buffet where you can pick and choose the rules you like!

Seems like Germany forgot they’re part of the EU and not just a member of the “let’s make our own rules” club. Who knew border checks were the new trend in fashion? 😂

  8. Looks like Germany’s decided that EU laws are just suggestions, eh? Next stop: a one-way ticket to the land of “We don’t do rules.” 🇩🇪✈️
