Bratislava – Richard Raši, Chairman of the National Council of the Slovak Republic (Hlas-SD), firmly stated that no criticism of the European Union justifies risking the future of Slovakia or contemplating a departure from the Union. His remarks were made during the celebration of the 21st anniversary of Slovakia’s EU membership, highlighting the importance of collaboration with Slovakia’s economic and security allies. Raši noted that this day also coincides with Labor Day, suggesting that the themes of both occasions are interlinked and reflect the foundational values of contemporary society, according to TASR.
“Lately, there have been voices advocating for leaving the EU, claiming it is outdated, overly bureaucratic, and not competitive with global powers. While we can discuss these points—after all, they are often raised in European Union forums—I must stress that none of these arguments should endanger the future of the Slovak Republic or lead to discussions about exiting the EU,” Raši remarked.
He further explained that such rhetoric only complicates Slovakia’s standing within the EU and tarnishes its reputation as a reliable partner.
The National Council’s head stressed that as a small nation with an open economy, Slovakia heavily relies on foreign investments. “Western investments play a significant role in our economy, and we use EU funds to enhance living standards across regions. Statistics illustrate that European funding is significantly improving the quality of life in our towns and cities, as the state budget alone cannot meet all needs,” he pointed out.
Raši highlighted a series of challenges currently facing Slovakia and the EU, including economic revitalization, the implementation of sustainable green policies without reckless experimentation, support for research and innovation, migration management, and energy security—all while maintaining Slovakia’s global competitiveness.
“In today’s climate, Slovakia’s approach must be centered on collaboration with our economic and security partners. Only through constructive dialogue and avoiding unnecessary conflict can we secure the prosperity of the Slovak Republic,” Raši concluded, urging a responsible and factual approach to decision-making.
