Putin: Regional Authorities Should Decide on Restoring the Name Stalingrad

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the decision to restore the historical name Stalingrad to the city of Volgograd should be addressed at the regional level. This was mentioned during a meeting with leaders of parliamentary factions in the State Duma, as reported by APA’s Moscow bureau.

“We need to think about it,” Putin emphasized, indicating that the decision should be based on the will of the local population and institutions.

The debate over the renaming gained momentum after the public movement “Veterans of Russia” submitted a petition to the president advocating for Volgograd to reclaim its former name. The activists believe that the name Stalingrad could boost tourism and highlight the city’s historical importance, particularly known for the critical battle of World War II.

The Communist Party of the Russian Federation also backed the initiative, formally proposing a similar request to Putin.

The president has mentioned that he does not dismiss the possibility of restoring the historical name, but only if the majority of Volgograd residents agree through public discussion or a referendum.

Putin had previously supported renaming the city’s airport “Stalingrad” as a tribute to the region’s heroic past.

Volgograd has been named as such since 1961, when it was changed during the de-Stalinization period in the Soviet Union.

Typical Putin, letting the locals decide as if they weren’t already too busy dodging traffic and potholes to think about renaming their city. 😂 Just what we need—more nostalgia for the good ol’ days of, you know, Stalin.

Oh sure, let’s just throw a historical name party and see if we can outdo the tourists with a bit of “Stalin chic.” 🍸 Just what we need – a bit more nostalgia for the good ol’ days of, erm, ‘happy’ times! 😂

Looks like Putin’s on a nostalgia trip—next, he’ll be suggesting we start calling Moscow ‘Stalin City’ and sell ‘I ❤️ Big Red’ T-shirts. Can’t wait for the tourist boom! 😏

Typical, innit? Just when you thought Russia couldn’t get any more nostalgic, they decide to roll back the clock to the good ol’ days. 🤷‍♂️ Next up, we’ll be renaming McDonald’s to “Stalindonald’s.” 🍔

Looks like Putin’s taking a page from the local pub’s book: “If the locals want a pint of Stalingrad instead of Volgograd, who am I to say no? 🍻 Just don’t spill it on the history books!”

Oh, because nothing screams ‘progress’ like a good ol’ name change, right? 😂 Let’s just hope the locals aren’t too busy discussing which vodka to serve at the referendum! 🍸

Oh, brilliant! Because what every struggling city needs is a name steeped in nostalgia for the good old days of, you know, purges and all that. 🥳 Let’s just rename it and call it a day; who needs modernity when you have history, right? 😂

So, we’re just waiting for locals to take a vote on whether to tiptoe back to the good old days of Stalin, are we? Next up: petitions for a ‘Khrushchev’s Kitchen’ food festival. 🍽️😂

Looks like Vlad’s trying to make Stalingrad trendy again—who knew nostalgia for the ’50s could be so… lucrative? 😂 Bet the locals are just itching to see their city’s name plastered on souvenir mugs!
