Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued an apology to Azerbaijan for the “tragic” downing of an Azerbaijan Airlines plane on Christmas Day. However, he did not explicitly acknowledge Russia’s responsibility for the incident.
In a statement released by the Kremlin on Saturday, it was revealed that Putin expressed regret over the event during a phone call with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev. “Vladimir Putin apologized for the fact that the tragic incident occurred in Russian airspace and once again expressed his deep and sincere condolences to the families of the victims,” the statement read.
According to the Russian leader, the airliner was attempting to land in Grozny while Ukrainian drone attacks were ongoing in the region.
