Hasselt – This afternoon, justice sector employees gathered outside the courthouse in Hasselt to highlight ongoing staffing shortages. The demonstration is part of the broader campaign “Justice Deserves Respect, It’s Five to Twelve,” which seeks to draw attention to the structural challenges facing Belgium’s justice system.
Justice personnel united in Hasselt today to protest understaffing across the judiciary. This week’s protest focused specifically on staffing deficits and is part of a broader campaign calling for major reforms within the justice system, as reported by VRT.
The campaign takes a rotating focus each week on different systemic concerns. Bart Willocx, First President at the Court of Appeal in Antwerp, emphasized that justice often receives less public and political attention compared to other sectors.
“If 1 in 4 jobs in a hospital or a school are not filled, you also have a big problem,”
Willocx noted.
Decades of underfunding have taken a toll on the justice system, making it increasingly difficult for magistrates and prosecutors to fulfill their duties. This has led to delays and cancellations of court hearings, affecting not only legal professionals but also the public seeking justice.
What is the background of Belgium’s justice system challenges?
Belgium’s legal system has long operated under the influence of French legal traditions, particularly the Napoleonic Code of Criminal Procedure dating back to 1808. Despite gaining independence in 1830, Belgium has struggled to fully modernize these foundational legal structures.
One of the primary issues has been the legacy of judiciary-led investigations, which critics argue can result in an imbalance favoring the prosecution. Additionally, there have been ongoing concerns about lengthy pre-trial detentions and insufficient protections for those accused. Over the years, various reform efforts have aimed to improve fairness and efficiency within the system, though challenges persist.

Isn’t it just delightful to see our justice system running on the same model as a two-star hotel? Just when you think it couldn’t get any worse, they prove you wrong! 🏨🙃

Doesn’t it just warm the cockles of your heart to see our justice system getting the attention it deserves… right after the local pub runs out of beer? 🍻 Who knew a protest could be so fashionable in Hasselt? 😏

Nothing like a good protest to remind us that when it comes to justice in Belgium, we’ve somehow managed to drop the ball – or maybe we just mislaid it in the queue for a decent coffee. ☕️🙄 #FiveToTwelveAndCounting

Seems like the only thing more scarce than staff around here is common sense! Perhaps we should just start assigning court dates to our coffee breaks—it’s all the rage in the justice system these days! 😂🕵️♂️

Staff shortages at the courthouse? What a shocker! Who would’ve thought that ‘justice delayed is justice denied’ could also apply to the staff? 😏 It’s like trying to run a café with one barista—good luck getting your double espresso!☕️

Oh, brilliant! Nothing screams “justice” quite like a demonstration outside a courthouse—because who needs a full staff when you’ve got a good ol’ protest to solve all your problems, right? 🤷♂️😏

Oh, fantastic! Nothing screams “efficient justice” quite like a bunch of overworked magistrates and empty chairs—maybe we should just call it the “Hasselt Court of Napping”? 💤💼
